"Elsie From England" was founded in 1976, like so many
other businesses, as a labor of love. Elsie Dillard - yes! there really
is an Elsie - migrated to America from England to join other family
members who had come before her. Whilst here, many of her new American
friends sought her advice when traveling to Great Britain - where should
they go? what should they see? where should they stay? etc. Elsie was
astonished to learn that many Americans would visit Britain for months
and never meet a Briton other than the service staff at hotels, and coach
drivers etc. While this might have been understandable in countries where
a language barrier existed, it was certainly inexcusable between
Americans and British.
Elsie
was also horrified to learn how much people had spent to stay in hotels
that might have been anywhere in the world. She remembered how she had
stayed in small Bed & Breakfasts when she traveled around Britain, and
thought that this would be the ideal way to combine economy with friendly
interchange. This became so popular that she had to give up her other
business - real estate & insurance - and devote herself full time to the
travel business - "Elsie From England was born!" Today, our Bed &
Breakfast holiday remains the most sought after holiday by Americans
wanting to see the real Britain.
Since that time, the company has also had to increase
its variety of offerings as people were now wanting to return to Britain
in search of new experiences. Whilst traveling on their Bed & Breakfast
holidays, they saw splendid British gardens and wanted to see more. We
therefore started offering independent and guided tours of English
Gardens - which now include Irish and French gardens.
Travelers had discovered one of the great cities of
the world - London, and wanted to explore more of it...hence the creation
of our very popular London packages using both hotels and apartments. As
people, in general, became more active, we saw a demand in our Walking
Holidays which are easily incorporated into the traditional holiday.
Whilst traveling in Britain, Americans rediscovered the joy of rail
travel and many of our clients now do Bed & Breakfast holidays by rail -
especially those who don't fancy driving on the "other side" of the road.
In addition, our escorted group tour of Britain By Train continues to
increase in popularity year to year.
In
the early 80s Elsie - who is half Irish - started offering similar travel
experiences to Ireland, and today Ireland has become almost as much in
demand as Britain. In fact, a large number of our clients now include
Ireland in their itinerary when visiting Britain. As people return to
Britain after their first visit, so too are they returning to Ireland to
see more, know more, and enjoy more.
Recent developments in the building of the tunnel
underneath the English Channel - known as the "chunnel" - has brought
travel between the downtown centers of London and Paris to a swift 3
hours. This has resulted in a huge demand for visits to Paris. In
response to this we now offer packages to Paris and the rest of France.
Essentially,
we respond to what our clients want and need, although we remain
essentially focused on our origins - Britain & Ireland. To us, these
countries are more than just travel "destinations." For many Americans,
Britain & Ireland are where their roots are, not just genetically, but
culturally. A visit to Britain & Ireland gives many Americans their first
sense of who they are. For those of us educated in the United States,
Britain & Ireland are also where our literary roots are: as children, we
went to sleep on Beatrix Potter stories; Christmas was spent reading or
watching Dickens; we grew up reading Bronte, Wordsworth, Sir Walter
Scott, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, James Joyce, James Herriot, Daphne du
Maurier, Agatha Christie, and Maeve Binchy...and many more. And whilst
this history makes Britain & Ireland feel familiar, one is always aware
that one is far away in a foreign land. This is a unique experience - to
feel so at home and familiar in places so far and foreign.
And, blessed with a common language (more or less) we are able to do that
one precious thing - communicate, and explore all that makes us alike and
different.
We have a very experienced and knowledgeable staff
which includes personnel from USA, Britain, Ireland and Australia. All
staff travel to Britain and Ireland each year to keep up with the latest
trends and goings on. Constant communication between the US and Britain -
with live people - ensure that we have the latest knowledge, which is
second to none, in the travel industry. If it's news in Britain today,
we'll be passing it on to you tomorrow. When we say our staff is
knowledgeable - we really mean it.
