DAILY ITINERARY
Day 1 Rome
Arrival in Rome, the "Eternal City", transfer on your own to your
hotel. You are in one of the greatest centers of Western civilization and the
first truly cosmopolitan city on earth. Balance of the day to relax or begin
exploration on your own. You may want to walk along the Spanish Steps at sunset
or have a nightcap on the Via Veneto.
Hotel Quirinale
Day 2 Rome
Sightseeing today introduces you to Ancient Rome; see the Trajan Market and the
bustling Piazza Venezia. Stop at Capitoline Hill, the smallest of the Seven
Hills of Rome. Continue to the Roman Forum, the ceremonial center of te city
under the Caesars. Today the ruins of the Forum have become a testament to the
Roman Civilization, as we know it. Then visit the ruins of the Circo Massimo,
used for races and cotests of the gladiators and o the Palatine Hill, one of the
original Seven Hills. A visit to the Colosseum is included (ex. Wed and Sun).
Colosseum, to many the symbol of Rome, is an amphitheater commissioned in AD 72
o the site of Nero's palace, and it was the legendary stage for gladiator and
wild animal fights. The remainder of the day is at leisure. (B)
Day 3 Rome/Sorrento
After breakfast, pick up your rental car and leave the city for Cassino to visit
the Abbey of Montecassino. This abbey founded by St. Benedict in 529 AD, is
extremely interesting because this is where the Germans held out against the
Allied forces for almost a year in World War II. From Cassino, continue south
towards Naples, and enjoy a side trip to view the Phlaegrean Fields, one of the
bizarre attractions worth exploring west of Naples and along its bay. Continue
to Sorrento, your home for the next three nights. Perched on high cliffs
overlooking the Bays of Naples and Salerno, Sorrento has been sending out its
siren call for centuries, luring everybody from Homer to Lord and Lady Astor.

Hotel Cesare Augusto
Day 4 Pompeii/Herculaneum
Full day for individual exploration. Drive to Pompeii, where time was frozen in
the year 79 AD for the 25,000 people smothered y ashes from the eruption of
Mount Vesuvius. Wander the streets and visit the temples, lovely homes, bakery
and public baths. Many of the private homes have been reconstructed so you can
marvel at the inner courtyards, fountains, servants' quarters ad beautiful
dining rooms. Herculaneum was a seaside resort for patrician families when
Vesuvius erupted. (B)
Day 5 Capri
Full day for individual exploration. Travel to the enchanted island of Capri.
You will dock at Marina Grande and will want to take the fuicular to the tow of
Capri above. The heart of the resort is Piazza Umerto I, surrounded by
restaurants, elegant shops and crowds of people. To see the upper town of Capri
you will need to take a public bus to Anacapri, more remote and idyllic than the
main resort. To continue your ascent to the top, you may take the chair lift to
Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island with the panorama of the Bay of
Naples spread out before you! Return to Sorrento. (B)
Day 6 Sorrento/Positano/and the Amalfi Coast
A narrow twisting highway stretches for 11 miles around the Amalfi peninsula for
the little resort of Positano, you base for the next two nights. John Steinbeck
once wrote: "Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn't quite real
when you are there and becomes beckoningly real after you are gone." After
checking into the hotel, you may choose to relax on the beach or explore the
village on foot. Or you may wish to continue 4 miles to Ravello, a village
perched high above the Tyrrhenian Sea with dazzling views. (B)
Hotel Romantik Poseidon
Day 7 Poseidonia and Emerald Grotto
Full day for individual exploration. Drive along the coast in the direction of
Salerno, continuing an hour south to the ancient Sybarite city of Paestm (Poseidonia).
The city dating back to 699 BC, was excavated in the mid 18th century. The
remnants are the finest heritage from the Greek colonies that settled in Italy.
Returning to Positano, you will find the Emerald Grotto, located en route to
Amalfi. We feel this is not to be missed! You will find an elevator going down
the steep cliff to a rock terrace. Your guide will take you via a small boat
through the caves filled with colorful stalactites and stalagmites. There is
also a nativity scene below the water that magically appears ad then drifts from
view. (B)
Day 8 Positano/Naples
Drive north to Naples, the birthplace of Caruso and Sophia Loren. Naples is
Italy's most controversial city and you'll either love it or hate it! (B)
Hotel Royal Continental
Day 9 Naples/Departure
Tour services end after breakfast. (B)
