Looking for a tour of Spain designed for a leisurely pace, with a unique
itinerary and accommodations in paradors and historic hotels? One with the
flexibility to linger and admire a monument or explore a quaint town rather than
just driving past it?
The following itinerary is an example of what Legend Tours can provide!
DAILY ITINERARY
Day 1 Madrid
Upon arrival at Madrid's airport or rail station you will be met and transferred
to your hotel. During the remainder of the day, get acquainted with this lively
city on your own. Explore elegant parks, avenues with smart shops and fine
dining, plus a delightful old town surrounding the graceful Plaza Mayor.
Hotel Wellington
Day 2 Madrid
Your morning tour of Madrid includes a visit to the Royal Palace, one of the
best preserved in Europe. The tour will continue to the Prado Museum with time
to wander through one of Europe's most comprehensive collections of art on your
own. Evening to be spent at leisure. (B)
Day 3 Madrid/Avila/Salamanca
You will want to depart early this morning and drive to the old walled city of
Avila. Take time to explore a town studded with palaces, churches, and convents.
Continue to Salamanca, one of Spain's foremost cultural centers and a showcase
for intricately sculpted Renaissance architecture in golden stone. Enjoy the
balance of the afternoon to perhaps visit the twin Old and New Cathedrals. The
Casa de las Conchas (House of Shells), with its scallop shells dotting its
walls, is another unique site to view. (B)
Hotel Parador de Salamanca
Day 4 Salamanca/Caceres
Drive through beautiful countryside to Caceres. I the Old Town gold-stone
mansions line the quaint, narrow streets. Two churches are worth finding: Santa
Maria, on the main square, and San Mateo.
Hotel Parador de Caceres
Day 5 Caceres/Merdia/Zafra
After breakfast drive to Merdia, where you will fid the Roman ruins and the
famous Roman theatre and amphitheater. Continue your journey through Extremadura
to Zafra and the Parador, located inside the 15th century castle. (B)
Hotel Parador de Zafra
Day 6 Zafra/Seville
Enjoy a leisurely morning in this charming town before you begin the drive to
Seville. Upon arrival, make your way to the hotel in the heart of the city.
Seville is gorgeous and spirited and the charming sectors around the cathedral
can be easily explored on foot. (B)
Hotel Las Casas del Rey de Baeza
Day 7 Seville
A Hop-On Hop-Off tour introduces the highlights of the city. You might want to
visit the massive 15th Century cathedral, where Columbus lies beneath a
monumental tomb, then continue on the next bus to pass through the Santa Cruz
quarter, with its flower-decked wrought iron balconies. Tickets for this tour
are valid for one day. Spend the afternoon at leisure. (B)
Day 8 Seville /Granada
You may choose to take an indirect route to Granada, one which passes by Cordoba
to visit the great Mosque, now used as a cathedral. Its striking architecture
will surely impress you. Continue to Granada, the home of the fabulous Alhambra,
where Spanish and Islamic architecture reached its climax. Once checked into the
hotel, you can walk over to the Alhambra for a self-guided tour of this great
Moorish palace. (B)
Hotel Parador de Granada
Day 9 Granada/Toledo
Depart Granada for today's trip through Andalucia, into La Mancha, where Miguel
de Cervantes, the author of the immortal work Don Quixote de la mancha, created
his characters. Continue your journey to the city of Toledo, perched high above
the River Tagus, where you will spend the night. (B)
Hotel Parador de Toledo
Day 10 Toledo/Madrid
A self-guided walking tour of Toledo should include its huge cathedral, whose
contents include works by Velazquez and Toledo's adopted genius, El Greco, who
spent his last years in the city. His masterpiece, The Burial of the Count of
Orgaz, is housed in the Iglesia de Santo Tome. Ornate synagogues attest to a
once-thriving Jewish community in that area. You won't want to leave this
enchanting town, but your last night is spent in nearby Madrid! Return your car
this afternoon and enjoy the evening in lively Madrid! Perhaps take in one of
the evening tours offered on page 9 of this brochure, like a night at the select
night-club Florida Park. There you can enjoy dinner and the Great Flamenco
Fiesta show. (B)
Hotel Wellington
Day 11 Madrid/Departure
Tour services end after breakfast. (B)
