ONE DAY SIGHTSEEING TOURS FROM
LONDON TO GREAT BRITISH GARDENS
Our classic, ever-popular program of tours from central London offers the
opportunity to visit such famous gardens as Sissinghurst Castle Garden in Kent
and Hidcote Manor Garden in the Cotswolds with ease and comfort.
Each tour is accompanied by a friendly, garden-loving guide and visits at
least two gardens. Transportation will be in a fully air-conditioned coach and
all entrance fees are included.
TUESDAYS: May 7th - September 24th inclusive
KENT
Visiting Sissinghurst Castle Garden, one of the world's most
celebrated gardens, the creation of Vita Sackville-West and her husband Sir
Harold Nicolson. Developed around the surviving parts of an Elizabethan mansion
with a central red-brick prospect tower, a series of small, enclosed
compartments, intimate in scale and romantic in atmosphere, provide outstanding
design and color throughout the season. The study where Vita worked, and library
are also open to visitors. The day also includes a visit to another, usually
private garden specially selected for its charm and season.
On 7th & 24th May, 11th June, 2nd July, 6th August & 3rd September the
tour follows the life of Vita Sackville-West beginning with a view of the
exterior of the Knole the stately home where Vita was brought up. Later visit
privately owned Long Barn the first garden designed by Vita and Harold before
they moved to Sissinghurst.
WEDNESDAYS: May 1st - September 25th inclusive
THE COTSWOLDS
Visiting Hidcote Manor Garden, one of England's great gardens. A
series of outdoor rooms, each with a different character and separated by walls
and hedges of many different species. The day begins with a visit to Waterperry
Gardens, once a gardeners' training school for ladies from which Vita
Sackville-West recruited her gardeners for Sissinghurst. On this day there will
be a stop to explore and lunch in a Cotswold town.
SUNDAYS: May 5th - September 29th inclusive
KENT
Visiting Sissinghurst Castle Garden then on to Great Dixter. This,
one of the best-known gardens in England, is the private garden of the eminent
gardener and garden writer Christopher Lloyd. The garden surrounds the 15th
century house. Here you will find a series of gardens both formal and informal
with wonderful plantings, color and form.
