The British Isles is one of the most superb destinations for walkers and
hikers in the entire world, due mostly to the fact that the British are avid
walkers and are fiercely protective of their footpaths and trails. Walking in
Britain is unique in its combination of unspoiled natural beauty and ancient
history, with trails wending through spectacular coastlines, ancient fortresses,
and historic cities.
Elsie from England is pleased to offer a superb collection of walks with two
general categories: Guided Walks and Independent Walks.
Single Center - Single Center walking holidays use country hotels as a
base for seven-night walking tours exploring the surrounding countryside. These
tours are all in places where a varied and interesting week's walking is within
easy reach by minibus. On each tour, one day (generally Wednesday) is left free
for your own activities.
Classic Trails -These 'Inn-to-Inn' tours offer the opportunity to walk
some of Britain's finest National Trails and Long Distance Paths, stopping in a
different place each night, with your luggage transferred between each overnight
halt.
About our guided walking holidays
Our guided walking holidays fall into two categories:
Single Center tours based in comfortable country hotels and
Classic Trails where you stay in a variety of hotels, inns and
guesthouses as you walk a National Trail or Long Distance Path.
Each guided walking tour is graded so that you can choose the one most suited
to your fitness and previous walking experience. The grade reflects the
distances covered, terrain and gradients encountered.

Grading
All our guided walking holidays are graded so that you can choose the one
most suited to your fitness and experience. No back-packing is involved - you
only need to carry your daily requirements in a light day pack. Please note that
what we in Britain refer to as walking is more commonly described as hiking in
North America.
G - Gentle
Between 6 and 8 miles (10-13km). Gradients generally easy. The emphasis on
these tours is on a leisurely pace with plenty of time to explore the sites of
historical, cultural or natural interest encountered on the way.
M - Moderate
Between 8 and 12 miles (13-19km). Paths usually good, but may be rough,
stony or wet in places. Some longer and steeper ascents involved.
LM -Long Moderate
Longer walks up to around 16 miles (25km) over terrain similar to the
Moderate grade walks.
E- Energetic
Typically hill, mountain or moorland walks of around 8 to 12 miles (13-19km)
with around 2500 ft to 3000ft (750-900m) of ascent, taken at a steady pace with
plenty of breathers or 'view stops'.
If you are unsure of which grade to choose, or have any questions
concerning distances, terrain covered or suitable equipment - please contact us,
we will be delighted to advise you.
Groups and leaders
Our groups are small, never more than 12 people plus the walks leader. The
atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. There is a mix of ages, of new clients and
'regulars' from Britain and overseas, and of couples, friends and people
travelling singly.
All our walks leaders are experienced, mostly local enthusiasts who provide
thoughtful, safe and informative leadership at all times.
